Forensics: Catching The Killer

Project type

Documentary 20x60'

Date

2022 - 2023

Role

Assistant Producer

'Forensics: Catching the Killer' is a gripping true-crime documentary series that explores real murder cases where forensic science was the key to unlocking the truth — from fingerprints and soil analysis to fibre, DNA, and other forensic breakthroughs. The show delves deep into each case: investigators, forensic scientists, police officers, witnesses, journalists, and family members recount how painstaking detective work and cutting-edge forensics combined to catch killers who might otherwise have escaped justice.

The series is produced by True North Productions for broadcast on Sky Crime (and related streaming platforms such as NOW in the UK), and first launched in December 2021.

Across multiple seasons — including its first two, on which I worked — the show has covered high-profile and historically significant cases, making it a major reference among true-crime and forensic-science audiences in the UK and beyond.

In my role as Assistant Producer on the first two series, I was deeply involved in shaping the show’s narrative foundation. I researched and selected murder cases that hinged on forensic breakthroughs, contacted and liaised with victims’ families, detectives, forensic scientists, journalists and key witnesses, and organised preliminary research chats. I conducted interviews, managed archival research — sourcing material from archive houses such as Getty, Alamy and Mirrorpix — negotiated licensing costs under the budget, and arranged UK locations for interviews when needed.

One standout project involved the case of Karen Price (known in the press as “Little Miss Nobody”): while exploring a small 1980s newspaper article, I discovered how advances in DNA and forensic reconstruction solved her case, and during research I uncovered previously unreported abuse at the children’s home she had absconded from. By speaking with people who lived at the home and victims who had suffered there, we unearthed vital context that had never been documented — bringing new light to the story. This episode went on to win the RTS Award for Low Cost Factual at the 2022 awards.

I then continued working on Series 2, on which the episode featuring the murder of Helen McCourt contributed to the series receiving a True Crime Award for Outstanding On‑Screen Series.

Through this work, I helped ensure that each episode not only stitched together forensic facts and police procedure, but also treated victims, their families and surviving witnesses with dignity and sensitivity — offering viewers both rigorous investigative detail and humane storytelling on some of the UK’s most tragic true-crime cases.
